Systems engineering and testing for powertrains

Simulation tools include 0D, 1D, 3D CFD, and vehicle simulations. From single components and the powertrain to the entire vehicle.

• 0D simulation: gas exchange, combustion, estimation of thermodynamic potential
• 1D simulation: interaction of gas exchange, air system, and exhaust-gas treatment
• 3D simulation: analysis and optimization of charge motion, injection, mixture formation for liquid and gaseous fuels
• Vehicle simulation: analysis and optimization of powertrain topology and operating strategy in statutory and real driving cycles

Detailed analysis and optimization of combustion processes for liquid and gaseous fuels through the use of an experimental toolchain, from the optical chamber to tests on a single-cylinder motor and up to the complete motor. Use of temporally and spatially high-resolution optical measurement methods, such as laser light section, laser induced velocimetry (LIF), particle image velocimetry (PIV), schlieren imaging, and high-speed video endoscopy (HSVE).

In the full motor and the vehicle, the overall system is expanded to include the air system and exhaust-gas treatment, in addition to the injection and ignition system, and is optimized for high efficiency and low emissions using intelligent software and control solutions. To do this, the following aspects, among others, are analyzed and optimized:

• Exhaust-gas recirculation, to reduce emissions and increase efficiency
• Charging system, to maximize stationary and transient performance under a wide variety of operating conditions
• Exhaust-gas management system, to achieve low exhaust-gas emissions and environmental impact
• Driving behavior and exhaust-gas emissions are also assessed and optimized during real driving on the dynamometer and on the road

With its worldwide testing centers, Bosch offers a full range of testing services for motors and components. Using comprehensive, modern testing equipment and fully automated test bench control, a diverse array of testing procedures can be implemented efficiently based on each customer’s requirements.

This is done using both virtualization approaches such as real-time coupling of vehicle simulations with the motor test bench and a digitalized engineering environment for testing.

Bosch also offers a complete range of vehicle testing services at its test centers. Using comprehensive, modern testing equipment, tasks such as fully automated vehicle measurements can be implemented on dynamometers even in varying climatic conditions.

In addition to the existing infrastructure consisting of an internal test track, a cold/climate center, and vehicle workshops for customer-specific additions and alterations, driving in real road traffic with a portable emissions measurement system (PEMS) is also part of the service portfolio from Bosch.
