The glow system consists of glow plugs with ceramic or metal heating elements, a glow control unit and heating software. The electronic glow control unit adapts the heat output of the glow plugs to meet engine requirements. The engine control unit selects the heating functions based on input information such as actuation of the ignition key. The heating temperature is adaptively controlled with reference to other parameters such as the coolant temperature or engine speed. The glow control unit converts these into a signal for the glow plugs. It also performs reliable diagnosis of the glow plugs.
As a result, the temperature at the glow plug is adjusted reliably to the perfect setting under all conditions. A modern glow system not only contributes to ensuring that the engine is able to start in cold and critical situations, but also to reducing HC and CO emissions during the engine warm-up phase.
