Optimization of the traffic flow is achieved by means of cooperative driving maneuvers. For example, in a situation in which one of the lanes is closed up ahead, the vehicles will use V2X to communicate to their surroundings that they intend to change lanes. The vehicles in the neighboring lane receive this information. They then increase their distance to the vehicle in front and allow the traffic to merge into their lane. The traffic continues to flow smoothly.

When it comes to braking, every second counts. If a vehicle has to brake due to a traffic obstruction, the vehicles traveling behind will be informed about this immediately via V2X and will automatically activate their brake lights. This enables the drivers of the following vehicles to react sooner and apply their brakes. Traffic jams and even accidents can thus be prevented.

Especially in complex intersection scenarios, dangerous situations will often arise as a result of impaired visibility due to stationary traffic or buildings. V2X is used to warn the driver about approaching traffic, even traffic that is outside the driver’s field of vision. The driver is warned in good time about the risk of collision with intersecting traffic. Only when the intersecting traffic has passed the intersection will the vehicle yielding the right of way continue on its journey.

Thanks to V2X, vehicles can also exchange data with road infrastructure. For example, traffic signals at road intersections can inform approaching traffic about the duration of the green phase. Vehicles in moving traffic can then adapt their speed accordingly and take advantage of the green wave. This saves time and helps save the environment.
