driver assistance systems

Safety for all involved, whether on the road, rails, at logistics depots, or on the construction site

Vehicle safety and driver assistance systems protect not only vehicle occupants, but also reduce the risk for all traffic participants. They are also a prerequisite for automated driving. The safety of all road users has always been top priority for Bosch in every regard. Therefore, as one of the leading global providers of these systems, Bosch has been continuously developing the basic safety systems as well as new solutions for decades. Invented for life, literally.

Increasing safety for a vision of accident-free mobility

For Bosch, road safety has always been the number-one priority – worldwide and for all traffic participants. Products and functions from Bosch help to reduce the number of accidents overall as well as the number of traffic fatalities and injuries. Even though safety standards and accident statistics vary widely from region to region, Bosch believes in the vision of accident-free mobility around the world and is working to make it a reality.

Active safety systems such as ABS and ESP® act in critical situations and can prevent accidents, while passive safety systems such as electronic control unit

for airbags and seatbelt tensioners are activated in the event of a collision with an obstacle or another road user.

As a leading provider of vehicle safety, driver assistance, and automated driving systems, Bosch has been developing these systems for decades and offers components and complete system solutions for a variety of vehicle segments and vehicle classes. Whether the goal is to bring all levels of automation safely to the road or to continuously develop the basic technologies, Bosch is the partner of choice.

Safety and driver assistance systems for passenger cars

Active and passive safety systems and driver assistance systems for passenger cars

More than 1.2 billion passenger cars are on the road around the world today. With the increasing volume of traffic, the need for effective safety systems for occupants and other roads users is on the rise as well. Over the past several decades, Bosch has developed such safety systems as the antilock braking system (ABS) and electronic stability program (ESP®) – systems that are now part of the standard equipment of passenger cars or are even legally required in many regions.

And these vehicle safety systems are being continuously developed by Bosch. The steadily growing range of smart driver assistance systems from Bosch is also contributing to greater safety in road traffic. They support drivers in many situations, reduce their stress levels, and pave the way for automated driving.

The system offers pedestrians a much more effective crumple zone in the event of a collision, thus minimizing the risk of injury.

Occupant protection system

Occupant protection system

The smart system composed of sensors and el. control unit activates the occupant restraints in the car as needed for max. passenger protection.

Vehicle dynamics control 2.0

Vehicle dynamics control 2.0

The innovative control concept uses the full potential of braking, steering, powertrain, and chassis for vehicle dynamics control.

Safety and driver assistance systems for heavy-duty commercial vehicles

Active and passive safety systems and driver assistance systems for heavy-duty commercial vehicles

Accidents with heavy-duty commercial vehicles in road traffic are often particularly serious. Here, smart safety and assistance systems can save lives by preventing accidents or at least mitigating their severity. For this reason, work is being done around the world to incorporate these important safety technologies into law.

To meet both regional requirements and the highest safety standards for assisted driving, Bosch offers a comprehensive portfolio for mid-sized and heavy-duty commercial vehicles, ranging from essential single components to complete systems. In addition to surround sensors, the smart steering systems from Bosch are among the key technologies that ensure greater safety in the commercial vehicle segment.

Servotwin electrohydraulic steering system

Servotwin electrohydraulic steering system

The system provides additional safety through crosswind compensation, lane-keeping support, and many other driver assistance features.

Blind spot detection

Blind spot detection

The system issues an acoustic and/or haptic warning to alert the driver to other road users in the blind spot based on sensor data.

Moving-off information system

Moving-off information system

The system helps to prevent collisions with heavy-duty commercial vehicles and other road users immediately in front of the vehicle.

Safety systems for two-wheelers and powersports

Greater motorcycle safety thanks to smart technology.

In addition to pedestrians, drivers of two-wheelers and powersports vehicles are among the most vulnerable road users. Therefore, Bosch also has a vision in the two-wheeler and powersports sector: a future without deadly accidents. The effectiveness of innovations such as the antilock braking system (ABS) developed especially for two-wheelers is undisputed: since 2017, it has been legally required in the EU for all newly registered motorized two-wheelers with an engine displacement of more than 125 cubic centimeters.

Especially in emerging markets, where two-wheelers make up a large proportion of mass mobility, such basic active safety systems can save many lives. Bosch supports two-wheeler and powersports manufacturers around the world in meeting their regional requirements and needs. To achieve the goal of comprehensive safety that we have set for ourselves, Bosch is consistently developing an even greater array of safety and assistance solutions beyond the currently available technologies.

Advanced rider assistance systems (ARAS)

Advanced rider assistance systems (ARAS)

The precise detection of the vehicle’s surroundings by radar sensors enables innovative new safety and assistance functions.

Motorcycle ABS

Motorcycle ABS

The system prevents the wheels from locking and ensures the necessary vehicle stability and optimal deceleration during braking.

Semi-active damping control

Semi-active damping control

The system improves the vehicle stability of powersports vehicles using dynamically collected data on the terrain condition.

Off-highway and rail

Surround-sensing solutions for off-highway applications

For off-highway and rail traffic applications, even the smallest collisions can have serious consequences. The large machines are often complicated and some offer little to no visibility of the operating area.

Here, too, Bosch has safety in mind and provides a comprehensive portfolio of sensor solutions for surround sensing to actively minimize the risk of accidents and passively minimize their consequences. This protects not only people and objects in the surroundings, but also reduces the stress level of the machine operator.

By-wire systems

In by-wire systems, the transmission of mechanical force between control and actuating elements is replaced by electrical connections. Examples include steer-by-wire and brake-by-wire. The advantages of the individual systems come not only from saving space in the interior and greater flexibility during installation of components, but also in the variety of new functions for increased safety, comfort, and agility, which were not available before now with conventional steering and braking systems. Bosch’s advanced steering and braking system technology and its redundant on-board data and energy supplies meet even the highest safety standards.

Cybersecurity

Ever-smarter safety and assistance systems require ever more complex software. With the complexity of such applications and the increasing connectivity of vehicles, the threat from cyberattacks also increases. Especially for safety-relevant driving functions, Bosch is continuously developing defenses against cyberthreats over the entire life cycle of the vehicle, even after the vehicle has left the factory.
