In Europe and the U.S., Bosch is paving the way for fuel cell technology in commercial vehicles and is successfully demonstrating its suitability. For some years now, the company has been working with the American business Nikola on the development and production of heavy-duty fuel cell trucks for long-haul transport.

When a startup mentality is combined with 130 years of automotive expertise, the results truly reflect the “best of both worlds”. Synergies are being exploited, and the first trucks are already on the road.

The production volume in the U.S. is to rise continuously, while the European market will also soon witness the first 40-ton trucks. Bosch is supplying fuel cell power modules along with many other electronic components. Bosch and Qingling – fuel cell-electric trucks in China

Hydrogen truck with Bosch fuel cell technology on China’s roads

Bosch founded the joint venture Bosch Hydrogen Powertrain Systems with the commercial vehicle manufacturer Qingling Motors in China’s Chongqing municipality.

In 2021, a fleet of 70 customer trucks equipped with fuel cell power modules successfully completed a roundtrip of the highway between Chongqing and Chengdu, with thousands more kilometers to follow. A vehicle pre-series is now rolling off the production line, and fuel cell power modules are being sold to manufacturers across China.

Today there are already over 100 vehicles on the roads across China.

Important project milestone: TÜV road approval

Using two demonstrator vans equipped with fuel cell technology, Bosch is gathering data to facilitate the ongoing development of the fuel cell as an alternative energy source for electrified powertrains. And the project has already delivered some important findings: even when loaded, the vehicles can travel up to 540 kilometers, and they are fully refueled after just six minutes. The vehicle conversion was planned and executed by Bosch Engineering in collaboration with its partner Abt eLine GmbH.
