Electrically powered with hydrogen – and guided by your needs

Driven by hydrogen

The fuel cell-electric drive solution from Bosch is extremely efficient, convenient, and produces zero local emissions. It opens the door to sustainable mobility for passenger cars and commercial vehicles. With this technology, hydrogen is used to generate electrical energy, which the electric drive then converts into motion.

Fuel cell electric vehicles feature an impressive range of several hundred kilometers and short refueling times.

Semiconductor expertise: expansion of production and development

Semiconductors are part of practically every technical device today in the form of microchips. Without them, cars would no longer run. Bosch responded to the ever-increasing demand for semiconductors by opening the new chip factory in Dresden, Germany, in 2021. But that’s not all. Bosch is now taking its semiconductor-related activities to the next level: with an additional investment of three billion euros by 2026, the technology company plans to further expand its semiconductor activities.

Automotive Chips

The development of automotive semiconductors is more difficult than in other applications. The chips are subjected to strong vibrations and fluctuations in temperature and climate over the entire service life of the vehicle. This means they must be extremely reliable. Bosch has established the required expertise over decades and uses its system competence in electronics and software for the development and production of semiconductors. The result: robust, durable chips that enable applications such as automated and resource-saving electrified driving and the best possible protection for vehicle occupants.

Silicon carbide as a boost for e-mobility

Bosch is currently the only automotive supplier in the world to produce power semiconductors from silicon carbide (SiC) itself. Compared with the silicon chips used to date, silicon carbide semiconductors reduce power and switching losses. They provide greater power density and efficiency. Lower energy losses and higher switching frequencies allow more compact power electronics and so make SiC semiconductors especially well suited to deployment in electric vehicles. Particularly during the many acceleration phases in city traffic, the new silicon carbide semiconductors used in the power electronics offer significant efficiency gains.

Advancing electrically – even when braking

Regenerative braking system

Bosch offers its partners regenerative braking systems whose energy recuperation capabilities reduce the fuel consumption of hybrid vehicles and increase the range of electric vehicles. Since the conventional friction brake is applied less often, such systems can furthermore help to reduce brake dust emissions significantly. Bosch’s portfolio includes both vacuum-based and vacuum-independent brake systems.

The principle behind regenerative braking is simple: during braking, the electric motor of the hybrid or electric vehicle switches to generator mode. The wheels transfer the kinetic energy via the powertrain to the generator. This converts a portion of the energy into electricity, which is stored in the battery. If the produced braking torque is insufficient, the friction brake is applied for deceleration to supply the braking power that the driver wants.

Greater range – thanks to thermal management

To utilize the full potential of an electric vehicle, the electric motor, power electronics, and battery must be operated in the optimal temperature range.

Smart thermal management results in increased range, enables faster charging and pleasant temperatures in the vehicle interior, and extends the vehicle’s life cycle. Bosch supports its partners with innovative, economical solutions.
