How the front and corner radar works
Bosch’s radar of the latest-generation excels as a sensor for safety and Level 2 functions, combining highest sensitivity and Compute performance with maximum usage of AI. It delivers best-in-class radar performance in the real world by reliably detecting small objects, maintaining utmost precision across temperature variations, and providing benchmark-level interference robustness. Designed for maximum supply chain robustness, it boasts proprietary key components such as the SoC, power supply, and waveguide antenna. Enhanced Compute capabilities enable deep-learning–based perception and help to pave the way for future architectures based on central AI fusion. It is the first Tier 1 radar on the market to feature an in-house, cutting-edge system-on-chip.
Our new front radar generation transforms how vehicles perceive the road ahead, reliably detecting objects up to 530 meters away – a distance of more than five football fields. This advanced system identifies potential hazards at an early stage, thus providing crucial time for safe responses at high speeds of up to 210 km/h. The technology excels in critical scenarios, for example, by detecting the end of traffic jams, including in tunnels, and identifying obstacles
under traffic sign gantries. By leveraging our end-to-end development expertise, which encompasses everything from semiconductor design to software integration, the system maintains consistent performance across all driving conditions, including adverse weather and high-interference environments. Designed to meet upcoming global safety regulations, the new generation provides an affordable path to advanced safety features while preparing your vehicle for tomorrow's automated driving capabilities.
Corner radar sensors can therefore, for example, help the driver “see” what is happening within the vehicle’s blind spot. And if the driver starts a lane-change maneuver, the system will provide assistance in the form of visual, acoustic or haptic alerts. It also provides support for automatic lane changes. But not only that: in parking situations, the corner radar sensors help the driver to detect and keep an eye on other road users. The rear cross-traffic alert system uses the radar sensors to alert the driver to traffic passing by behind the vehicle when reversing out of a parking space. And when a person inside the vehicle opens a door, the car exit warning system uses the corner radar sensors to detect any road users approaching from behind and provides an early warning of the risk of a collision.
