The electronically controlled unit injector is a single-cylinder injection pump with integrated injection nozzle and solenoid valve that is installed directly in the cylinder head of the diesel engine. A separate injector is assigned to each engine cylinder. The unit injectors are powered by an injection cam on the engine camshaft via a rocker lever.
The injection start and quantity are determined by the fast switching solenoid valve, although these variables can be freely selected in the program. The solenoid valve is opened when not energized.
This ensures a free passage from the fuel feed of the low-pressure system through the pump area and back into the low-pressure system in the cylinder head of the engine, which allows filling of the pump chamber during the suction stroke of the pump piston. This bypass is closed when the solenoid valve is energized during the delivery stroke of the pump piston. This causes pressure to build up in the high-pressure area and the injection of fuel into the engine's combustion chamber when the nozzle opening pressure is exceeded.
