Automated Driving Alliance

Wide-ranging collaboration of Bosch and CARIAD

Within the Automated Driving Alliance, Bosch and CARIAD are collaborating to develop a scalable platform for assisted and automated driving (up to SAE Level 3). The goal: creating advanced driving functions that are cost-effective, accessible for everyone, and suitable for integration across all vehicle segments. It represents the only European initiative to advance automated driving at this scale.

Bosch and CARIAD jointly develop automated driving functions using AI technologies

The Automated Driving Alliance — formed by Bosch and CARIAD in 2022 — is developing Level 2 systems that include "hands-free" capabilities for driving in cities, on rural roads, and on highways. In addition, the Alliance is working on a Level 3 system that takes complete control of the vehicle when driving on highways. By combining real-world driving data with an agile, iterative development approach, the Alliance is creating a scalable software platform that enhances safety, comfort, and efficiency for drivers and passengers alike.

At the heart of this collaboration is a shared development ecosystem that enables engineers to efficiently test, validate, and implement software updates. With short planning cycles and continuous feedback, this agile methodology ensures fast, reliable progress in a highly complex domain.

The Alliance's software stack is already running in test vehicles and undergoing rigorous validation on public roads across Europe, the United States, and Japan. By continuously expanding its testing efforts, the Alliance improves update cycles and optimizes data processing workflows to support ongoing innovation. In 2025, the Alliance focuses on collecting vast amounts of data and enhancing the integration of AI technologies, thereby paving the way for more intelligent and adaptive driving functions.

As a long-term goal, millions of vehicles from the Volkswagen Group are expected to feature these jointly developed Level 2 and Level 3 driving functions. Furthermore, Bosch will provide this scalable solution to other car manufacturers, promoting the broader adoption of automated driving across all vehicle segments.

”Data is key when it comes to bringing automated driving systems to the road both reliably and on a large scale. We can only master this challenge together by collaborating on an equal footing and breaking with old ways of thinking. In the Automated Driving Alliance, we are demonstrating with CARIAD how this can be done successfully.”

The Automated Driving Alliance: A Strategic Partnership

The Automated Driving Alliance: A Strategic Partnership

CARIAD and Bosch formed the Automated Driving Alliance in 2022 to accelerate the development of advanced driver assistance and automated driving functions. Experts from both companies are collaborating to develop scalable driving systems up to Level 3. In 2023, the Alliance deployed its first test vehicles to refine the jointly developed software stack using real-world data. Most recently, testing expanded to Japan and the US, where the Volkswagen ID. Buzz is evaluating the Alliance software stack in complex urban and highway scenarios.
